Home Projects Project Briefs NSF Award CMS-0639428: Integrated Maintenance-Monitoring-Management Framework for Optimal Decision Making in Bridge Life-Cycle Performance

 

This project aims to develop integrated maintenance-monitoring-management systems for highway bridge infrastructure at both project-level and network-level, based on simulated and monitored time-dependent bridge health as well as reliability and life-cycle cost analyses.

Although civil engineering practice has been largely impacted by the advances in structural health monitoring (SHM), there is still an outstanding question of how to optimally plan SHM activities over the service life of bridges. The main objective of this project is to develop integrated maintenance-monitoring-management systems (IMS) for highway bridge infrastructure at both project-level and network-level, based on simulated and monitored time-dependent bridge health as well as reliability and life-cycle cost analyses. The goals are: to develop methodologies for predicting lifetime performance of individual bridges with monitoring; to develop the IMS framework at project-level considering multiple and competing objective functions; to extend the project-level IMS to a group of bridges that are geographically distributed to form a highway network; and to develop a multi-objective optimizer. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) with Dr. Dan M. Frangopol as the Principal Investigator.

PITA Project: Integrated Framework using Monitoring and Reliability for Improved infrastructure Management under Uncertainty: Phases 1, 2, and 3

 

The aim of the PITA project is to develop a novel integrated framework using structural health monitoring and reliability technologies for improved bridge management under uncertainty. Through the use of new technologies and the employment of structural health monitoring and reliability approaches, the project is expected to have significant impact on bridge lifetime management practices.
