Home Projects Project Briefs FHWA Award DTFH61-07-H-00040: Development and Demonstration of System-Based Monitoring Approaches for Improved Infrastructure Management under Uncertainty

 

The objective of this project is to develop efficient bridge management systems by collecting objective data through a continuous structural health monitoring (SHM) system for estimating the infrastructure remaining service life by means of performance prediction models.

The bridge management systems generate large amounts of data during the design, construction and maintenance of the infrastructure assets. There is an urgent need that these management systems develop tools that provide effective and efficient management of the transportation infrastructure. This project is aimed to address these needs by collecting objective data through a continuous structural health monitoring (SHM) system for estimating the infrastructure remaining service life by means of performance prediction models. The technical approach include: defining relevant failure modes and reliability estimation; developing SHM design to collect most relevant data for performance prediction; developing specialized monitoring for deterioration evaluation; developing deterioration and live load models over time; integrating safety as well as serviceability limit states; developing data collection, management, evaluation and transfer protocols; incorporating uncertainties and predictive analysis using Bayesian updating. This project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) with Dr. Dan M. Frangopol as the Principal Investigator at Lehigh University.

PITA Project: Integrated Framework using Monitoring and Reliability for Improved infrastructure Management under Uncertainty: Phases 1, 2, and 3

 

The aim of the PITA project is to develop a novel integrated framework using structural health monitoring and reliability technologies for improved bridge management under uncertainty. Through the use of new technologies and the employment of structural health monitoring and reliability approaches, the project is expected to have significant impact on bridge lifetime management practices.
