Research and Scholarship
Dr. Sause conducts integrated experimental and analytical research on innovative seismic-resistant steel and precast concrete structures; on steel highway bridge systems, including the application of high performance steel (HPS) and the development of innovative bridge girder systems; on the fatigue performance of steel highway structures; on the in-service performance of prestressed box beam bridges; and on fiber-reinforced polymer composite ship structures. He has been Principal or co-Principal Investigator for more than 40 research projects with budgets exceeding $50,000, and for 10 large-scale multi-investigator research programs with budgets exceeding $1 million. He is co-author of more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 180 conference and workshop proceedings papers and technical reports. Dr. Sause is a winner of the J. James R. Croes Medal (American Society of Civil Engineers, 2007), the Charles C. Zollman Award (Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, 2006), the Raymond C. Reese Structural Research Award (American Concrete Institute, 1987), and the Best Paper, Journal of Architectural Engineering Award (American Society of Civil Engineers, 1997); he was part of a team that won the Charles Pankow Award for Innovation (Civil Engineering Research Foundation, 1997).
Teaching
Dr. Sause teaches courses in Structural Dynamics, Stability and Design of Steel Structures, Bridge Engineering, and Structural Analysis. He has supervised or co-supervised more than 30 completed M.S. student theses and 20 completed Ph.D. student dissertations. Some of these former Ph.D. students are now faculty members at Auburn University, University of Illinois, University of Notre Dame, Princeton University, and Purdue University in the US, as well as at several universities overseas.
